Cosmic education: working with time and the calendar

In our morning circles we looked closely at how our week is put together. Each day we talk about the date and count along the month chain, naming the day of the week as we go. To make the days more tangible, we marked them in colour.
Together the children worked out which special activities happen on which day: the “Researching with Fred” sessions for the pre-school children on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the movement sessions, or voting on lunch on Fridays. They painted the results on their own and in pairs; the pictures hang in the corridor.
We also learned the finger rhyme “Good morning, Mr Monday…”. In the craft room the children can make a fan of the days of the week.
Over the coming days we will talk about feelings and opinions — the way into the subject of emotions and children's rights. We begin with the affirmation “I am right as I am, and I matter”, which follows from the right of every person to be regarded as equal in worth.
