Butterfly project: an update

On 17 April, seven caterpillars moved in with us in a rearing cup, well supplied with food. Over the following nine days we watched them grow longer and fatter. By Friday three had already pupated; the remaining four climbed upwards over the weekend, attached themselves to the fabric lid and pupated as well.

One chrysalis fell down — which also happens in the wild. As it was moved into the rearing cage it shook itself instinctively, which is probably meant to deter predators. The children found this behaviour thoroughly interesting and watched it closely.

Now we are waiting to see how long it takes for the painted ladies to emerge.
