Together for nature and community: our garden day

In May 2025, parents and children of Montessori Kronberg improved the extensive grounds with wheelbarrows, spades and a great deal of energy. The aim was to make the playground safer and to shape it more deliberately as a habitat for people and for nature.

The big tipper truck and the digger

Excitement began the day before: an enormous tipper truck delivered fresh wood chips for the safety surface under the climbing frames. The greatest enthusiasm greeted the arrival of a real digger. Two committed fathers, among them committee member Frank Soyka, operated it themselves and prepared the ground for better drainage.

The day itself

The safety surface under the play equipment was renewed to inspection standard, the water channel for the playground's own pump was repaired and the soil loosened. Along the channel we set natural stone and plants to create a place for birds and insects. Pollinator-friendly perennials went into the ground, and invasive ornamentals were removed.

A home for insects

A particular highlight was building a large insect hotel. It offers solitary bees, ladybirds and lacewings shelter, somewhere to nest and somewhere to overwinter — and contributes to biodiversity, to pollination and to natural pest control.

The day was organised by our parents' association, founded in 1995 by six committed parents. Membership is required of all parents — and it is far more than a formality: many give their time and effort to the “Monte community”.
