Parents' letter: reading support, learning assessment and the Mathematics Olympiad

Reading support
One focus of our work is supporting reading. After finishing a book, your child fills in a small slip with the title and author. These go into a draw box, and each month a book token is drawn. The progress is visible as a reading caterpillar growing along the school corridor: for every ten books read, it gains another segment.
Assessing where children are
For some years now we have used an assessment programme from the Westermann publishing house. It measures specific areas of competence in German and mathematics, matched to the year group and the Hessian curriculum. It lets teachers support and stretch children more precisely, and gives you as parents one further piece of information about where your child stands, alongside the teachers’ own records and observations.
Mathematics Olympiad
The children will have the chance to try problems from the Mathematics Olympiad. From next school year we are officially entered as a school for the competition.
